About the Jicareros
We are the jicareros or those who carry the jicaras or offering bowls on our sacred pilgrimage for this cycle of the tuki fiesta. We plan and organize the activities that take place in the ceremonies, as well as taking the offerings from the Tuki Fiesta to the sacred places. We are part of Grupo Tatewarí or Grandfather Fire medicine group. Like the others in our group, we are people who were born into the modern, westernized culture but found ourselves called to become mara’akate or healers and ritual leaders on the Wixárika path. In these times of great need, the gods are taking extraordinary measures to bring healing and wisdom back to our people. As is spoken in one of our prayer songs, we are “making the past the present.”
